Thanks! Very helpful!
Really enjoying these episodes about game development. I was surprised how much of Jason’s background and skill sets resonated with me, so it’s even made me curious about looking into work in this area sometime in the future. Love knowing more about how these wonderful experiences are crafted and go from idea to a box on the table. Thanks so much for the episode!
Have you integrated victorum and remastered? Wondering if I should do it.
Strong work, Liz. I'm trying to learn this solo and...my brain just does not want to grasp the basic flow across three-THREE-rules books in the box. Very helpful. (I have also noted that feeding the tower one-handed almost always spills a fifth die. Ha.)
Great review- thank you! I’m curious about your thoughts a year later now. Do you still enjoy the game? I would also be playing it mostly solo- do you play pure solo or two hand? Thoughts on the new campaign?
kindda look like darkest dungeon
Thank you for going over Active/Passive support. As someone just learning this was a bit confusing. Will keep watching the rest of your CL videos!
Any idea if this game is available yet?
Mine came in the mail recently after the campaign.
@@BeyondSolitaire So it's not available on the open market then yet I gather? it is only the pre orders on the kickstarter?
I'd just check the Worthington site.
I came across a dog-eared paperback version of this book in a library sale in 1985, which I still have, and have read several times through now. I was interested in Roman history, but had never heard of Julian; I was somewhat familiar with Gore Vidal, having seen him on the Tonight Show and other TV appearances in the '60's and '70's. My reading it coincided with my questioning of Christianity, so reading about the early days of the religion from a Pagan perspective was a revelation- I guess I can credit Vidal with being part of my break from Christianity. I reread it during the Pandemic, and was again impressed by the quality of the writing. I love how you sometimes get three different points of view of the same event from Julian, Libanius, and Priscus. And you realize that this book was probably an offshoot of Vidal's involvement in writing the screenplay for BEN-HUR (1959).
Has anyone figured out what the ammo chits do?
I picked up Margaret George's 'The Confessions of Young Nero' at a Dollar Tree store and thought I'd give it a chance, even though I wasn't impressed by her 'Memoirs of Cleopatra'. I was pleasantly surprised; it was actually pretty good. I also recommend 'The Far Arena' by Richard Ben Sapir: Through a series of events, a gladiator from the time of Domitian becomes frozen in a block of ice in the North Sea and is discovered and thawed out in the late 20th Century (the book came out in 1978). It's an interesting contrast between the Ancient and Modern worlds.
OK gladiator time travel sounds like a blast. I'm going to have to find this!
'Julian' is one of my favorite books- I've read it several times.
Thanks for your review, I always like to know your opinion when I am seriously considering a game. Theme and art are always are an entry point for my interest in sorting through the many great games available. As you are an atheist, I understand your lengthy disdain for this game's theme. I don't think that Saint Patrick bullying people to become Christians is an historically accurate depiction. As I am an engineer and high school physics teacher I have similar disdain for Terraforming Mars. It ignores or trivializes all the real obstacles of human life on Mars. This proves too great a distraction for me to enjoy the game. Also, congratulations on your new venture at Leder Games! They are one of my favorite publishers & Root is my favorite board game.
Thanks for your opinion on the solo mode(s).
When are we gonna start 6 degrees of David Thompson designer wise? Just sayin’!
Aww, Fado 🥰
Great interview! I don't have all y'all's designs yet ... but I am working on it!
Didn’t know u were catholic! Cool!
I am not, just get a kick out of fun pilgrimage items.
Porto is such a great city - enjoy ☺️
Good thing you, Roger, and Trevor knew about each other beforehand! 🤣
Crazy cool location. How did you find this restaurant?
Someone on Twitter recommended it to me! One of the few times it was a good idea to listen to someone on Twitter. :D
As a former Catholic now Episcopalian, I love this! So pretty
Nice to see Catholic representation in board game media! Totus tuus! :)
I'm not Catholic, but I do have a PhD in Ancient Christianity! I am always very interested in stuff like this. :)
if I wanted to play against the chancellor and the exile both as automatons, the exile has his deck of cards but what about the chancellor? Does he keeps the old flow chart? Thank you
This mode is separate from the old flowchart. You might be able to run 2 automata from the same bot deck, which I have been experimenting with, but we will see!
@@BeyondSolitaire Did you find positive differences compared to the old flow chart or is the real player's simulation closer tona multigame using the deck of cards?
I'm not sure I understand this question. But I prefer a deck to a flowchart in general which is why we're moving that direction.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
shoulda packed the 200lb Lisboa to play and photo on that balcony! 😂 …not really…
Anything for the clicks! :P
What are some examples of the old school war games that he's talking about? I'm not familiar with GMTs back catalogue on account of the fact that I've come into the hobbyist board gaming sphere through the efforts of Quackalope and Boardgameco.
Basically old Avalon Hill stuff leading to GMT. Actually, Fred Serval (Homo Ludens) and I have a video series called “Wargame Archaeology” where we are working through the history ourselves!
Happy birthday, Liz.
Happy birthday!
Happy Bday!
It’s a lot easier to get old when the dinner is that good. ;)
So glad to see you interviewed Marco. He's been around for a very long time on YT. He was about the only source on here to review wargames back then, so whenever Marco reviewed a game I had to check it out. But I don't share his outlook on the future of wargames. Innovation happened, but being a niche, it's harder to spot and takes longer to surface?
I don’t always agree with Marco but it doesn’t change how interesting he is as a conversation partner! He was actually in 2 episodes my very first season of the pod if you want to hear our first convos. :)
calandale was the first but Macro came four or five months later. But I agree with you on outlook on war gaming and kind of agree with Marco. I agree with Marco that old school wargaming is likely dyeing out but there is so many playing war gaming now. Warhammer (GW) have never been bigger, yeah, it's miniatures war gaming but war gaming nonetheless, GMT and MMP publish a lot of games and there's a lot of kickstarter war games so, war gaming are not going everywhere. I recently bought Plantenet from GMT and it's a very innovative game.
Very helpful, thank you very much
I think a lot of people think an app will help them learn a board game. Maybe a built-in tutorial will. But I find that an app taking care of all the game stuff makes me lazy, and I don't learn the details at all. When I have to understand the game enough to move all the pieces around and implement the mechanics, then I truly internalize (and appreciate/enjoy) it more.
Very true.
Looks like a future solo board game to me. 🎲
This is awesome
Yeah, i thought it was Lisbon with the pigeons short. How are you liking it there? Have fun!
I am having an awesome time! Lisbon is a lovely city, and I will be here a couple more days before we go to Porto.
No mention of Hounds and Jackals, famously depicted in The Ten Commandments, believe it or not there’s actually a close replica of it available online, and a rather simple version of it as well.
Big Cole fan that only really plays solo. This is the only game that collects dust. Thank you for designing what I could not. That said, it does feel like this is a 2p patch and not optimized for solo.
You should check out my designer diary! Ricky and I are on this as part our next design phase. boardgamegeek.com/thread/3312256/clockwork-designer-diary-1-the-queen-is-dead-long
Welcome! That must’ve been early, never seen that street so empty. Enjoy your stay!
It was! I love to get up early. :)
Simplifying into a deck is great. I've gotten used to the flow chart but it does take up space. So the deck should be a much more elegant design. Can't wait. I play Oath solo almost exclusively so I'm looking forward to this.
Liz, thank you for the free Latin lesson! And, as always, the expert review and analysis! Nick Stasnopolis
Hi Liz, I recently bought a used copy of Oath mainly because I heard you and Ricky Royal were gonna design a solo mode. The video was great but I understood very little since I haven't tried it yet. Can you recommend a rules / game play video to learn the game?
I didn’t learn from UA-cam but I know Heavy Cardboard and Tom Teaches have done vids.
Hi Liz, Richard (aka RR) has suggested I contact you regarding testing for the Clockwork Adversaries. I tested Oath and the Clockwork Prince and together with my friend tested Root Marauder and the Arcs Campaign at 2 on TTS. Thank you Steve.
Can you email me or message me on Discord? (Beyondsolitaire)
Thanks for the video. I’ve just got the game at UKGE. I’ve had an eye on Hoplomachus since watching Ricky Royals videos of the original game. With your connection to Chip Theory, do you think they will bring out the Victorium chips as a separate set. I understand that you can use them in Remastered. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing, Liz!
Love hearing the designer's insights about introducing their culture's knowledge and practices into the player experience and game theme. So exciting to have more of this in our hobby. Also - Liz I love your questions for the guests - just what I wanted to know too.
"doing community" .... communitizing perhaps? (very awkward, I know)
So what are your final thoughs one year later now that you have had the chance to play with the expansions? 🙂
It’s here but still in shrink and I am trying to get to it!
@@BeyondSolitaire Looking forward to hear about it
Liz, you and Ricky are an inspiration! Excited to see this being developed!
Really excited to see this getting made. Hopefully you and Ricky have an opportunity to work on a solo and/or co-op mode for Arcs base and campaign
